Sensory Room

At Yarnley House Care Home in Ringwood, our thoughtfully designed sensory room offers a soothing and enriching space for residents, particularly those living with conditions such as dementia, cerebral palsy, sensory impairments, visual or hearing impairments. With calming light displays, soft sounds and a variety of tactile objects, our sensory room gently engages the senses and provides a peaceful environment where residents can feel safe, supported and at ease.

Whether it is used as part of a structured one-to-one session or simply as a quiet retreat, the sensory room helps to encourage relaxation, focus, and communication. Residents are free to explore the space in their own time, creating moments of comfort and connection. Staff are on hand to offer tailored guidance, and as part of our wider care approach, the sensory room plays an important role in enhancing overall wellbeing.

What Is a Sensory Room?

The sensory room at Yarnley House has been designed to gently stimulate sight, sound, smell and touch. For residents living with dementia, being in the sensory room can encourage powerful moments of reminiscence. Familiar sounds, scents and objects can bring back comforting memories, offering emotional clarity and a greater sense of identity to those who feel disoriented or anxious.

Each sensory experience is adapted to reflect the preferences and needs of the individual. Whether a resident is living with memory loss or has a physical or cognitive impairment, this calming space is free from pressure or expectation.

At our care home in Ringwood, the sensory room is also often used as part of our one-to-one activities programme. During these sessions, residents may enjoy hand massages, soft music, or simply spending time with a trusted member of the team. All sessions are shaped by each resident’s care plan and we often speak with family members to discover personal memories, scents or sounds that may be especially meaningful.

The Benefits of a Sensory Room

The sensory room at Yarnley House was purposefully created for residents who may need additional support in processing the world around them. This includes those living with dementia, as well as residents experiencing age-related sensory changes or reduced mobility. The room offers a therapeutic alternative to traditional social spaces, allowing for shared engagement in a calm, focused setting.

Residents who may struggle to communicate through words often find new ways to express themselves through sensory interaction. The room helps reduce feelings of stress and can even promote restful sleep. Each element has been purposefully chosen to provide a positive impact on the mind and mood while helping support overall cognitive health.

Sensory Room FAQs

Sensory Rooms are designed with the thought of including different elements to help those with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities, and dementia in stimulating and engaging their senses as well as sensory impairments. For those living with dementia, they could take part in finger painting, listening to music, animal therapy, folding towels, hand massages and so much more. All these activities can improve the mental and emotional well-being of all of our residents, no matter their care needs.

In our sensory room, you will find comfortable seating options, coloured lighting, soft furnishings and tactile objects.
